 Yoga Now

We are at a critical time in the evolution of the human species. We at the Give Back Yoga Foundation believe that is why the science of yoga has surfaced so powerfully in the West at this time as a method of personal growth, and why more and more people are “getting into” yoga.  All of us collectively are looking for a map out of the morass. The ancient methodology of classical yoga is a trail map through the tangle. It was a practical guide for those seeking health and happiness two thousand years ago and, miraculously, it still is today. It shows us a way to live confidently and fearlessly in a world of constant change, to understand the ups and downs of life, and to maintain equipoise in the midst of the storms.

Yoga starts for most of us with the practice of asana, or the practice of the yoga postures. At first glance it seems like just “exercise.” But this isn’t just some mindless form of “exercise”. Yoga is about learning to pay attention to the present moment. And the true definition of the practice of yoga is simply about making an effort to keep the mind steady and focused.  That means we can practice, not just when we are on our yoga mats doing our “exercise,” but all the time – while walking the dog, showering, chopping carrots, and driving our kids to school.  If we dedicate ourselves to our practice, the mental training tools that accompany this seemingly innocuous “”exercise” teach us to focus and pay attention. And this is the key; this is where the secret lies to the change that – once we begin to practice - has just begun in our minds and bodies.

What happens from this attentiveness training? It changes us – for the better. We evolve, slowly. We become more aware, more conscious, more compassionate, and more community oriented. How does this happen? The focus on mindfulness brings us into the only reality that there is, the NOW and gets us out of the endless mental chatter and activity of lists, plans, and uncertainties about our escapades of yesterday and tomorrow. This feels good. We relax. Our mind quiets and we are able to access deeper levels of consciousness and this new way of seeing things expands our circle of compassion to include ever widening aspects of humanity and all life.

Sound too good to be true? Well, the only way to know what yoga is, and what it will do for you, is to start actually “doing” it. That is why we are dedicated to bringing this practice, in all its forms – from asana to community service in general, to everyone and anyone who has an interest, but may not be able to access – for reasons of geography or economics – a local yoga studio or yoga teacher.
